Burnside Homestead, Enfield Boutique Bed & Breakfast North Otago

Set in a superb 10 acre park, Burnside Homestead is on a 19th century Victorian country estate. Registered Category 1 by the NZ Historic Places Trust, describing it as "visually and aesthetically outstanding".

Both exterior and interior feature elaborately detailed Scottish architecture, with original decor, fabrics and antiques. Open for public viewing daily.

Accommodation
Guests enjoy the exclusive use of the main house, its suites, drawing room, library and billiard room, conservatory and formal dining room.

All Guest Suites are fully en-suited with contemporary facilities. Historic antiques grace all rooms. A total of ten guests may be accommodated with choice of rooms in main house or servants’ wing.

The special product of Burnside Homestead is the Victorian heritage that marks all aspects of hosting of people and functions.

Fine dining is the normal daily fare sourced from the bounty of organic orchard, herb & vegetable garden, and poultry; also local internationally renowned cheeses, gourmet potatoes, tomatoes and cherries in season.

The pantries overflow with jams and jellies, chutneys and pickles. The wines are sourced from the Waitaki Great Estates vineyards.

Footnote: Contemporary accommodation facilities include all modern comforts, central heating, fax, broadband internet and laptop available. Cell phone coverage is limited. Guests are welcome to advise special requirements, dietary, accessibility etc.

SERVICES

  • Historic Home Tours - Groups from 6 to 50 may book for daytime tours, usually from Labour Weekend to Easter. These provide a 90 minute experience of the homestead, its historic operation when seven servants were resident, its adaptation by the three families who have lived in it for one hundred and ten years. You see the formal and the behind the scenes living areas. You can walk the gardens, woods and farm.
  • Morning/Afternoon Teas - Groups of no less than 6 may book a special Victorian morning or afternoon tea, taking 45-60 minutes, with maid in attendance. This will include traditional dainty sandwiches and tart delicacies. A walk through the main house to the conservatory is included but not a full house tour unless time allows. Minimum price $12.50 pp; additional variants can apply.
  • Group Luncheons - A traditional buffet luncheon can be booked for 6 up to 40, minimum rate $17.50 pp. Options can include a sit down lunch for $22.50pp. All lunch food includes special Victorian traditional presentation, including staff dressed for the occasion. Menus as in season and negotiated. Both options include a part house tour as time allows. Advance bookings essential, usually at least 48 hours prior.
  • Victorian High Teas - This is a special experience. The Victorian custom of the unique late afternoon meal that brought families and guests together, enjoying a wide range of light delicacies, savoury and sweet, displaying their passion for specific food tastes and decoration. Groups of 10+ may book for serving from 4.30pm to 6pm. Minimum price $33.50….unless associated with an accommodation booking. All enquiries welcome and menus negotiable.
  • Special Celebrations & Anniversaries - Burnside Homestead is an ideal place for celebration of the historic family and community events that mark the milestones.
  • Great Hall - A range of options exist from formal dining room dinner for 20, or Great Hall reception format for around 40. Informal Victorian high teas may also be served using the formal or conservatory facilities. (see below)
  • Formal Dining - Dinner Menus vary with the seasons, but all feature traditional hors’ d’ouvres, soups, mains of poultry, hams and roasts, a range of desserts and delicacies. Prices range from $33.50 to $55.00, GST inclusive. Advance bookings essential, usually at least 14 days in advance.
  • Weddings and Receptions - Burnside Homestead can host an entire wedding occasion, and/or part celebration and catered reception at either site. All aspects of arrangements and costs are negotiable including out catering with marquees for the reception. Site booking fees will serve as nonrefundable but transferable date deposits from $500 upwards. Bookings that include accommodation bookings will be given preference, and discounted rates.
