Castle Hill Lodge in Garston provides a rural haven from which to discover the delights of the Northern Southland countryside.
This old Angler's Lodge is situated within 9 acres of stunning grounds with wonderful views and only minutes away from the sparkling Upper Mataura river, world renowned for Brown trout fly fishing. You'll begin to unwind the moment you arrive here as you are greeted with a warm welcome, home cooked food and cosy accommodation. Your hosts, Mark and Sharon, are keen travellers and love to share stories of their adventures around the world. Mark is a fly fisherman and can show you the best places to catch that trophy fish. A scrumptious cooked breakfast sets you up for the day and other meals or packed lunches can be arranged upon request.
There are direct major airline flights from Auckland and Christchurch, New Zealand and from Sydney, Australia into Queenstown. Smaller commuter airlines provide service from many New Zealand cities.
Garston Lodge Accommodation
Castle Hill Lodge has 2 double/twin en-suite rooms ( Borneo and Nepal room), 1 double/twin with private bathroom (S.E Asia room) and a family room (England Room) which has a double bed, double sofa bed, T.V with freeview, private entrance onto decking area and a bathroom with shower and roll top claw footed bath.
All rooms have tea and coffee making facilities. There is a guest lounge with a TV, books, games and internet access/WIFI free of charge. A fully cooked breakfast is served each morning and lunches and evening meals are available upon request. There is a deck and barbeque and 9 acres of land for you to lose yourself in.
Garston Activities
- Fishing: Close by is the world renowned Mataura River, famous for it's "match-the-hatch" fly fishing. You will enjoy fishing in this river and many of the other world class fisheries in the region. We can help you with fishing guides, transport and equipment.
- Mountain Biking: Ride some of the best mountain bike trails New Zealand has to offer. Fantastic terrain, beautiful scenery and all in and around the Queenstown region
- Skiing: The southern ski fields are all within an easy drive from Castle Hill Lodge. Coronet Peak, The Remarkables, Cardrona and Treble Cone - all famous and very accessible.
- Steam Train: The famous Kingston Flyer steam train is based in Kingston on the southern shores of Lake Wakatipu and about 20 minutes from Castle Hill Lodge. This vintage steam train will take you on the 14km stretch of railway that stretches between Kingston and Fairlight.
- Walking: There are many walking and hiking trails in the region with the famous Kepler Track only an hours drive away.
Our Location
Castle Hill Lodge is located near the small village of Garston in Northern Southland. Queenstown is to the north and about a 40 minute drive while to the west is Te Anau and Milford Sound. We are ideally placed for these two major tourist destinations in the south with the added attraction of the world famous Mataura River, renowned for it's brown trout and superb fly fishing
At The Lodge
There are 2 kune kune pigs, 2 sheep, 2 goats, 6 chickens and a very lovable cat called Hercules all of which love any attention they can get. They can all be hand fed and love to be stroked, yes even the pigs!
We have a beautiful decked area for you to relax on with plenty of seating and a bbq for your use.
There are 9 acres here for you to roam around and hundreds of books to work your way through.
