Fitzroy House is situated within Glenfern Sanctuary, part of the 230 hectare Kotuku Peninsula in Port Fitzroy, in the north of Great Barrier Island.
The accommodation available is "Seaview Cottage" and is nestled close to the water's edge of Port Fitzroy, with 200 acres of adjoining farmland and native bush.
You have the option of choosing to utilise the cottage only, or if you wish to, add-on a Guided Walk within Glenfern Sanctuary, or to experience our Hidden Trails Package; a 4 day total Barrier experience (accommodation included).
Accommodation at Seaview Cottage - Seaview Cottage was built adjacent to the main house in 1923, and like Fitzroy House, has been completely renovated to offer clean, comfortable accommodation for up to 6 people. The Cottage is a self-contained, 3 bedroom separate entity. Bedroom 1 contains one queen size bed, bedroom 2 contains a pair of single beds and bedroom 3 contains two single bunks.
The kitchen/lounge is well-equipped and comfortable, with French-doors opening onto two porches, both having marvelous views out over the Port and set against Barrier's native-bush-covered hills. A logaire fireplace in the lounge makes the cottage cosy and warm in the winter. The self-contained domestic facilities include all linen, towels, cutlery, crockery, pots, pans and the basic condiments. The Cottage has a full-size fridge/freezer and a gas stove.
The bathroom has a shower, wash hand-basin and toilet, and hot and cold water is supplied from a 5000-gallon rainwater tank. A BBQ is provided, together with a trestle table - so you can enjoy a great New Zealand outdoor tradition.
Private jetty and floating dock - A gentle walk from the cottage is the FitzRoy House jetty, floating-dock, boat-shed, and floating ramp, which have been designed specifically to cater for all marine activities. Lockable storage is available in the boat-shed for dive-tanks, fishing-rods and other marine gear.
With 2m of water alongside, at low spring tide, most boats can tie-up to the floating dock. A step-ladder off the dock makes swimming, fishing, paddling or sailing in the harbour's clear, clean water an easily-enjoyable experience.
An aluminum dinghy and canoes are available for your use as our guests, by arrangement. Fish to catch your dinner, or canoe the tranquil waters to the mouth of the inlet and come within a paddle's-length of local bird colonies.
Glenfern Sanctuary - Glenfern Sanctuary offers a rare opportunity to experience native wildlife on Great Barrier Island. The Sanctuary is part of 230ha Kotuku Peninsula in the north of Great Barrier Island between Port FitzRoy and Port Abercrombie and is the result of 20 years hard work with over 10,000 native trees planted, an extensive track network and a swing bridge which enables visitors to climb into the crown of a 600 year old kauri tree.
The construction of a predator proof fence across the peninsula in 2008 and a pest eradication programme in 2009 eliminated the pests. However ongoing rodent control is required to maintain this status from incursions round the fence ends and from boats and adjacent Great Barrier Island.
The Sanctuary is providing a safe habitat for many endangered native species including the black petrel and brown teal which are breeding here, also kaka and chevron skink and the recently introduced North Island robin.
