Lake Hawea Fishing & Farmstay, Lake Hawea
Hi, welcome to Harry’s place. I was born here, and have been farming and fishing here most of my life. I retired from farming 10 years ago, selling most of my farm to my family but keeping 10 hectares so I could concentrate on my tourism business, ie MORE FISHING!
Having said that I would hasten to add that I run two separate operations here, one being the Fishing, and the other the Farmstay and while the two work very well together most of my customers will do one or the other, not everyone being a fisherman and not all fishermen wanting a farmstay. So please do not feel you need to do both.
Fishing
I specialize in trolling for Rainbow Trout Brown Trout and Quinnat Salmon (chinook) from a 6 meter cabin boat called the Blue Moon (once in the Blue Moon you will catch fish). This method of fishing is suitable for people of all ages and levels of expertise. Some of my customers have never caught a fish before in their lives, but it is definatly on their list of ' Things to do when you go to New Zealand ' and even novices get the hang of it after an hour or two. I have a money back guarantee which says that if you don't catch any fish trolling you don't pay any money.
My average catch rate is 2-3 fish landed per hour and usually I like everyone on the crew to catch at least one fish. Of course the trout don't always agree with my theories. I do not do any scheduled trips, each trip is tailored to meet your preference as to departure time and duration. Tea and coffee is provided on every trip and lunch is supplied on a full day charter. All fishing gear is supplied, the only things you need to bring are some warm clothes some cool clothes, and your camera.
Farmstay
We have a self contained cottage alongside the homestead set in 2 acres of established garden. The cottage sleeps 6 people in 3 bedrooms, 2 with double beds and 1 with 2 single bunk beds. All linen and towels are provided. There is a well equipped kitchen-lounge and bathroom. Laundry facilities are available. A big stone barbecue on the lawn makes outdoor cooking + dining easy and fun. There is also a fish smoker available if you have been fishing. only ever book one group of people in at a time so your peace and quiet and privacy are assured.
Location
Our place is situated in Hawea, 6km's off state highway 6 - The Haast Pass Heritage Highway - which is the main tourist route between the West Coast and Wanaka-Queenstown. We are right out in the country yet only a 15 minute drive from Wanaka which has a good range of Restaurants, Bars, Shops and Tourist Attractions. There are 3 skifields within an hours drive of your farmstay accommodation and Queenstown is just an hours drive south.
