Te Papa, New Zealand's innovative and interactive national museum, is set in a breathtaking location on Wellington’s beautiful waterfront.

Te Papa is New Zealand's innovative and interactive national museum located on Wellington’s spectacular waterfront. Explore the great treasures and stories of this country – its unique natural environment, the vitality of Maori culture, its dynamic art heritage, and fascinating history.

Using a combination of the latest technology and classic storytelling, Te Papa educates, entertains, and inspires.

Experience an exquisitely carved marae (Maori meeting place), walk through living native bush, and be shaken in the Earthquake House as it simulates a real aftershock. View the national art collection, mix your own Pacific beats, then engage with the stories of New Zealand’s history. Come face-to-face with a colossal squid specimen and learn about its life through interactives and 3-D animation! Families can get hands-on in the four themed interactive children’s Discovery Centres. Then explore OurSpace, an exciting new interactive multi-media experience with a focus on New Zealand identity, and featuring new motion-simulator rides. This is serious fun!

Since opening in 1998, Te Papa has attracted over 19 million visitors and has been a huge success with international visitors as well as the local Kiwis. Te Papa is a ‘must see’ on every visitor’s itinerary.

With six floors to explore, the best way to enjoy Te Papa is to take a tour with a  knowledgeable Te Papa Host.
