Taieri Gorge Railway, Dunedin
A highlight of your visit to Dunedin is a trip on the Taieri Gorge Railway – one of the world’s great train trips and one of Dunedin’s top attractions.
This trip travels through some of New Zealand’s most beautiful scenery which can not be seen by road! The train departs daily from the magnificently restored railway station in the heart of this vibrant city acclaimed for its preserved heritage.
Upon departure from this splendid example of Flemish Renaissance architecture the train will run through the southern suburbs of Dunedin city and onto the fertile Taieri Plains before climbing into the Taieri Gorge itself.
Sit back and relax as the train negotiates this exhilarating narrow river gorge with cliff hugging tunnels and viaducts soaring high above the river or maybe take a photo on the open air platforms. The train will also stop for you to disembark for scenic and photo opportunities.
Upon leaving the gorge your train will emerge on to the Strath Taieri Plains - a rock strewn and almost lunar like landscape. This is Pukerangi and the train’s usual turn-around point. On the return journey to Dunedin City you can take full advantage of travelling the same route to take in the sights once more or pick up on those you missed.
The train trip includes a commentary, sightseeing stops, viewing platforms throughout the train and has a café aboard.
The Seasider is another trip run by the Taieri Gorge Railway and is an excellent additional trip to your Dunedin tour experience. Running seasonally, this trip offers fantastic views over Otago Harbour and the wild coastline. Taieri Gorge Railway and the Seasider are both considered “must-do” railway trips in New Zealand, not just for train enthusiasts, and are brilliant, qualmark endorsed, all weather entertainment.
