Mt Cook / Mackenzie Country
Mt Cook & MacKenzie Country
Aoraki Mt Cook/MacKenzie Country region - incorporates Aoraki Mt Cook Village, Lake Tekapo, Omarama, Fairlie, Mt Pukaki & Twizel.
Dominated by the peaks of Aoraki Mt Cook, New Zealand's highest mountain at 3,754 metres above sea level, this region is renowned for its clear starry nights, beautiful sunny days, remarkable turquoise blue lakes, valleys of emerald green and snow-capped mountains. The Aoraki Mt Cook National Park is home to many of New Zealand's native plants and animals - more distinctly the Mt Cook Lily (the worlds largest buttercup) and the Kea, our native mountain parrot.
Aoraki Mt Cook lies in the Southern Alps, the mountain range which runs the length of the South Island. A popular tourist destination, it is also a favourite challenge for mountain climbers.
Lake Tekapo is a popular tourist destination, and several resort hotels are located at the township of Lake Tekapo at the lake's southern end. Located midway between Christchurch and Queenstown, Lake Tekapo is an ideal stopover for travellers.
Twizel is a service and tourist town for visitors. Nearby Lake Ruataniwha supports water skiing, sailing and prominent rowing events, such as the Maadi Cup, while the Ohau Skifield and the Round Hill Ski Area attract winter tourists.
Accommodation in this area includes the popular Glentanner Park with it's range on onsite facilities, lakeside cabins at Lake Tekapo, luxury lodges and self contained motels - all with the stunning backdrop of the Southern Alps and breathtaking countryside.
